- Montherlant, Henry Millon de
(1895-1972)
writer
Born in Paris, Henry Millon de Montherlant, a novelist and dramatist, was also an ardent sportsman and nationalist, as well as a sensualist who sought to combine the values of paganism and Christianity. He was known for his literary championing of virile, aristocratic virtues and for his distain for the weaknesses that he perceived in French democracy. His first writings were autobiographical (La Relève du matin, 1920; Le Songe, 1922) and retraced the writer's Catholic youth, his exhilarating war experiences, and his participation in sports (Les Olympiques, 1924 and 1938). in his works, Montherlant celebrated the heroic life from which women were freely absent (Les Bestiaires, 1926, which recounted his experiences with bullfighting in spain), and he also defended sensuality in his Voyageurs traqués (Aux Fontaines du désir, 1927; La Petite Infante de Castille, 1929; Un Voyageur solitaire est un diable, 1961). Upon returning from travels in Europe and Africa (L'Histoire de l'amour de la rose des sables, 1951, is an extract from an unpublished text dealing with the colonial question), he wrote an incisive study on mores, Les Célibataires (1934), and a series of allegorical novels. Monterlant was named to the Académie Française in 1960.
